BATON ROUGE, LA – The No. 16 Texas A&M women's tennis team defeated LSU (14-9, 4-7) Friday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex. The Aggies (19-5, 7-4) are looking to keep pace with fourth-place Tennessee (17-5, 7-3) in the SEC standings as they are hunting for a top-four spot in the upcoming SEC Tournament.
"This was an excellent win for the team," Texas A&M women's tennis head coach Mark Weaver said. "I feel that other than the obvious win over No. 4 Vanderbilt, this was perhaps our best result of the season. To get a decisive win against a team that has been in the top-20 all season team on their home courts is a great result for us. It all started with us putting together some great practices this week and that translated over to the match."
A&M opened the match capturing the doubles point for the 16th time this season. A&M's duo of Tatiana Makarova and Jayci Goldsmith, ranked No. 50 nationally, topped the defending NCAA Doubles Championship tandem of Eden Richardson and Jessica Golovin, ranked No. 10, to open the match. After the Tigers took a 6-4 result on court two, A&M's Riley McQuaid and Lucia Quiterio defeated LSU's Kennan Johnson and Taylor Bridges, 6-3, on court three to clinch the point.
The Aggies took a quick 2-0 advantage as Renee McBryde won her match on court five due to LSU's Johnson being forced to retire due to illness. Goldsmith posted the third point of the day for A&M as she defeated No. 53 Golovin, 6-4, 6-3, on court two.
LSU earned their lone point of the day as Paris Corley edged McQuaid on court four, but A&M's Quiterio clinched the win with a 7-6(3), 6-3 triumph on court six.
The win was the Aggies 19th of the season, the most by an A&M team since the 2014 squad posted a 21-7 overall mark. Additionally, the Maroon & White earned their seventh SEC victory this spring to improve upon last season's league win total by two with two matches to play.
