Aggies Fall in Singles Quarterfinals

Oct 20, 2018

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Texas A&M's run in the ITA Texas Regional Championships came to an end as freshmen Katya Townsend and Jayci Goldsmith both were eliminated in the quarterfinal round of singles today at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

"Overall we feel that we had some very positive results in the tournament to take moving forward," A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "Perhaps today didn't quite go the way we would have liked, but there was definitely some high-level tennis played once again with Katya and Jayci."

Townsend suffered a 7-5, 6-3 setback against No. 1 seed and 21st-ranked Anna Turati of Texas, and Goldsmith fell, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, to Fernanda Labraña of Texas.

"Katya was neck-and-neck with one of the best players in the nation," Weaver added. "She had at least three games in the first set where she was up 40-love, but she unfortunately was not able to convert on what likely could have been the difference in the match.

"Jayci played some great tennis for the first set and a half, but to Lebraña's credit, she fought back and got off to a 4-1 lead in the third. Jayci fought back hard and had a no-ad point to make it 4-all but came up just short."

The Aggies conclude the fall portion of the 2018-19 schedule on Nov. 9-11, when they travel to Las Vegas to compete in the UNLV Rebel Invite.

"We had a few players who were out this weekend recovering from some minor injuries," Weaver said, "and once they are back to 100 percent, things will be looking very bright for the Aggies."
