Texas A&M Freshman Jessica Anzo Wins Flight 3 Championship

FORT WORTH – Texas A&M freshman Jessica Anzo won the Flight 3 championship at the Big 5 Challenge, finishing the tournament with a 4-0 record after defeating Zoe Spence of Notre Dame, 7-6 (5), 6-4, today at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The Aggies closed out the tournament by going a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles on the final day.

"Coach [Jorda] Szabo and I are very pleased with the level that we performed over the course of the tournament," Texas A&M head coach Mark Weaver said. "It's never easy competing for four straight days, and our group brought it every single point and we are very happy with that."

Sophomore Riley McQuaid and freshman Jayci Goldsmith both picked up straight-set singles wins today to each finish the tournament, 3-1. McQuaid defeated Annie Clark of Virginia Tech, 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 Flight, and Goldsmith defeated Shene Disbergen of Virginia Tech, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 Flight to close out the tournament.

Sophomore Dorthea Faa-Hviding got a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nina Sorkin of Virginia Tech at the No. 2 Flight to finish 2-2. Freshman Renee McBryde, playing in the No. 1 Flight, suffered a 6-4, 7-6 (4) loss to No. 32-ranked Natalie Novotna on the final day.

A&M was victorious in its only doubles match today as the freshman duo of Anzo and Katya Townsend defeated the Hokies' Dori Mesmer and Rita Pinto, 6-2. The Aggies continue their fall slate on Oct. 5 as they will compete in the three-day SMU Invitational in Dallas.
