LOS ANGELES – Valentin Vacherot of the No. 9 Texas A&M men's tennis team claimed the consolation title at the 2019 Sherwood Collegiate Cup presented by the Sherwood Country Club in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon. The Aggies were joined at the tournament by student-athletes from No. 7 UCLA and No. 10 Stanford.
Vacherot topped teammate Alex Vedri in the final, 7-6(4), 6-3 after dispatching of No. 101 Will Genesen of Stanford in the semifinals. Vedri reached the final after a walkover from teammates Carlos Aguilar in the semifinals. On the week Vacherot posted an impressive 4-1 record against a field that included six ranked singles players while Vedri accumulated three wins on the west coast.
Barnaby Smith and Noah Schachter earned a win in the bronze medal match of the doubles main draw after defeating Sameer Kumar and Timothy Sah of Stanford, 6-4. Smith and Schachter raced to the semifinals unblemished, but were topped by second-seed Axel Geller and Alex Rotsaert of Stanford, 6-2.
